Katie Peterson
Psychologist
My name is Katie Peterson, and I’m a registered psychologist currently offering appointments by telehealth. I have experience working with a variety of individuals, both in previous roles in government mental health services, and in private practice. I am currently open for referrals for adults aged 18 and above.
Regardless of a person’s diagnosis, my work focuses on identifying a person’s goals for therapy, reducing the severity and impact of symptoms, and developing skills that can be used to build a life filled with meaning and enjoyment. I like to focus on nurturing self-kindness and -compassion, and building self-esteem through the development of a strong therapeutic relationship and collaborative understanding of the origin’s of a person’s difficulties.
I have training and experience in a number of interventions including cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing (MI), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, schema therapy, and eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR – not available by telehealth), and am influenced by these approaches when tailoring individualised treatment plans.
I am passionate about reducing the stigma that is sometimes still associated with reaching out for support, and passionate about providing support to other health professionals to ensure that the helpers are also helping themselves.
As a member of the Climate Aware Practitioner’s Network, I am mindful of the impacts of and distress associated with our changing global environment, and take a holistic approach to managing distress and empowerment in this setting.
I am also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Eating Disorders, regularly complete training to remain abreast of current research and interventions, and offer CBT-E interventions for individuals experiencing eating disorders.
I completed a Master of Clinical Psychology with the Cairnmillar Institute, two year Psychology Internship with Canberra Health Services, and undergraduate study at the Australian National University. I am also a board-approved supervisor, and am able to provide secondary supervision to Clinical Masters students, and primary supervision to provisional psychologists in their 5+1 internship year.
